Cash Out Early?
Cash Out Early?
Subject describes herself as disciplined.
Three of the four legs had already come in with eleven minutes left in the fourth quarter, which was when the app offered her sixty-one dollars to stop. The full ticket paid two hundred and forty. She had put up twenty. The cash-out button was green, the size of a thumb-print, and it pulsed; the two-forty sat off to the side in grey six-point type.
She took the sixty-one. The fourth leg hit anyway. For three days — front desk at the veterinary clinic, twenty-nine, two roommates — she opened the app to look at the two hundred and forty she had been talked out of, and she was not angry at the app, she was angry at herself. On Sunday she put up forty, then eighty on the late game, and told her sister she was up on the week, which was true if the week began on Sunday.
