She told herself she was looking for the recipe. The feed gave her a woman deboning a chicken thigh, then a couple arguing in a parked car, then a golden retriever meeting a newborn, then a woman about her age listing what she wished she had done at thirty-six. She was thirty-six. She watched that one twice and went back to the chicken.
The feed had never asked her a single question. It had only counted: the half-second she lingered on the parked car, the two rewatches, the thing she did not scroll past at 12:40 a.m. Her husband asked what was funny and she said nothing, and it was true — she had not laughed in forty minutes. She was still watching.
