“It's not gambling. Look — there's a binder.”

Case File No. 054 Subject maintains a binder as evidence.

She would tell you the binder proved it. Nine pages filled, sleeves squared, a laminated checklist in the front — the paperwork of a hobbyist. The breaks ran live at 11 p.m. and she bought slots, $60 for a random team, watching a stranger in Kentucky cut cardboard on camera while her husband slept upstairs.

In eleven months she spent $19,400 and the binder gained six cards. The rest went into a shoebox marked BULK, which is where the answer was, if anyone had looked. When her sister used the word she got genuinely angry, then quiet, then said the thing about it holding value. Neither of them mentioned that she had never sold anything.

DIAGNOSIS — Asset class: cardboard. Liquidity: never tested.
