Twenty-three years old, she had planned the night to the minute: rideshare at 7:15, the good jacket, three friends already inside. The tickets lived in an app. So did the wallet, the bus card home, the group thread, and the flashlight she used to find her charger. At the gate she held up a phone that had quietly become an accurate and unhelpful mirror.
The attendant was kind about it, which was worse. Behind her the line groaned as one animal and then went back to its own screens. She stood outside the fence for forty minutes listening to a band she had saved eleven weeks for, borrowing nothing, asking no one, unable to recall a single phone number belonging to anybody who loved her.
